The Picasso Foundation was created by an agreement of a plenary session of the Málaga City Council on February 26th 1988, as an Autonomous Municipal Organization, with the objective to study and to promote the works and the figure of the artist.

Its head office is Pablo Picasso’s birthplace, at No. 15 in the Plaza de la Merced in Málaga, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument of National Interest on March 25th 1983. On February 20th, 1991, the Ministry of Culture incorporated the Foundation into the Spanish System of Museums.

Originally located on the first floor of the building, the installations of the Foundation were able to grow to occupy the rest of the property after its rehabilitation and re-inauguration by Their Majesties, the Spanish Monarchs on June 22nd 1998. Likewise, since 2005, the institution has another showroom at No.13 in the Plaza de la Merced.

Nowadays, the President of this Municipal Organization is the Mayor of Málaga, Mr. Francisco de la Torre Prados, the Vice President is Mr. Damian Caneda, the Coordinator of Department of Culture, and the Director is Mr. José María Luna. The governing bodies of the foundation are the Advisory Chair and its President.

The Picasso Foundation develops its goals following various methods of action: the promotion of its tourist-cultural value as the Birthplace Museum, the increase and conservation of its collections of arts, the organization of exhibitions and diverse cultural activities (conferences, didactic initiatives, etc.), the publication of the catalogues and monographs as well as the maintenance of a Documentation Centre specialized in the artist and modern art.
