Picasso’s parents belonged to families that had become settled in Malaga since the beginning of
the 19th Century. On his father’s side, they came from Cordoba; the maternal surname ‘Picasso’ was
Italian, of Genoese origin.
It is to Ricardo Huelin (1912-1991), related to Picasso by the Ruiz-Blasco branch of the
family, that we owe most of the data in our possession regarding the painter’s forbears, thanks to
family documents and traditions published by him in his book ‘Pablo Ruiz Picasso’ (Madrid: Revista
de Occidente, 1975). Rafael Inglada, in his book
Picasso antes del azul, I. Documentos familiares ineditos (Picasso before the Blue Period
I,
unpublished family documents)
(Malaga: Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation, 1995) has checked and in some cases expanded and
corrected this information.
